Furness Railway

Project Idea

The Furness Railway should be a natural for Rail3D — some of the best-known scenery in Britain, with lots of lakes, mountains and coast; plenty of industry to generate unusual traffic; the Kent and Leven viaducts; a great excuse to model the Ravenglass and Eskdale…

There are two obvious ways you could tackle this:

Pre-grouping version

Setting the model some time between 1875 and 1908, you could include the original 3ft gauge Ravenglasss & Eskdale. The main fr network would have to include at least Carnforth-Barrow and Barrow-Whitehaven, and probably the Coniston and Lakeside branches and the complex network around Barrow. Lots of coal trains and red fr locos.

Modern version

Simplified track layout, single railcars, nuclear fuel trains. You could still model the Lakeside branch as a preserved line (with pre-grouping fr stock), but the R&E would have to be 15″ gauge. Whitehaven station becomes a Tesco car park with a railway running through it…
