FAQ

Where does the data come from?

Data is collected from a number of places, including magazines, websites and news lists.  Some good websites for stock data are:

Why isn't  there a version for iPhone (etc)?

Mainly because of the cost of developing apps for IOS.

There is a web app under development, which runs on PCs or iPads (and iPhone in due course).  News on the web app can be found in the spotlog forum.

Why don't you have lists for xxx railway?

I create lists for the railways I am interested in, particularly those in areas I visit or am likely to visit (eg UK, Switzerland and Germany).

It takes a lot to keep a list uptodate and I don't have time to do everything.  If you can help add a list to the database, and help to keep it uptodate, please get in touch.  Users of Spotlog are currently working on datasets for Czechoslovakia and helping to setup the German datasets

Can I use spotlog to record bus numbers?

If you like.  Feel free.

You'd probably want to create a new data set (see below)

Can I add my own railway lists?

If you have information for a railway that we don't currently show, you can  use it with spotlog in two ways.

1) If you can share the data, and especially if you can help keep it uptodate, pleae get in touch about adding to the lists on this website, and making the list available through the spotlog updates.

2) you can add your own data to the app by creating an XML data file and importing it.  Instructions for creating an XML import are here

Why is the data for xxx out of date?

As I say, updating the information is time consuming:  We update information when available and we have time.  If you can supply corrections, or updates, or can help keep data uptodate, pleae get in touch.

Can I enter numbers I have seen before I had SpotLog?

Yes, of course.  You can enter them manually and set the date - which is a bit slow - or if you have  numbers in another system, you can prepare a bulk-import in the XML format SpotLog supports for import.

If you have a photo-collection (digital JPEG photo's) there is a companion program that runs on a PC (Photo Logger), this is designed to browse through a photo collection and make it easy to prepare an import XML file for SpotLog.  The program reads the date data from the JPEG file and allows you to enter location and number, the results are stored in an XML import file ready to import into SpotLog.

Can I get my data out of SpotLog?

Yes.

SpotLog backs up your records as an XML file - you can copy this XML file to a PC and manipulate it as you need to.

SpotLog also has a reporting facility which produces reports in HTML format.  (Reports)
